Faith After Christendom:
Catholic Identity
and Public Witness
in a Secular Age
What does it mean to live a convincing Catholic faith when Christianity can no longer be taken for granted?
For generations, Christian faith helped shape the culture around us. That is no longer the case in the same way. Today, faith must increasingly be chosen freely, understood more deeply, and lived with intention.
That changing reality is behind the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette and La Salette Retreat Center’s new lecture series, Faith After Christendom: Catholic Identity and Public Witness in a Secular Age. The series does not begin with fear or nostalgia for what once was. Instead, it asks a more pressing question: What kind of faith, and what kind of Christian witness, does this moment call for?
Each gathering includes a keynote talk, coffee, and time for real conversation.
Three questions will guide the series:- Can the Catholic faith remain credible today?
- What is the Church called to become in a post-Christian culture?
- How are Catholics called to live and bear witness in today's world?

Gloria Purvis is an author, commentator, public scholar, and advocate whose work brings Catholic faith into conversation with some of today’s most pressing issues. Through her writing, teaching, and extensive media presence, she has become a nationally recognized Catholic voice on human dignity, life issues, religious liberty, racial justice, and reconciliation.
She has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Fox News, PBS NewsHour, NPR, Newsweek, Relevant Radio, and Catholic Answers Live. She hosted the international radio program Morning Glory and later hosted and produced The Gloria Purvis Podcast.

Welcome Center“When Awe and Wonder Break Through: How Astonishment and Beauty Awaken Faith.”Br. Guy Consolmagno SJ, former Director of the Vatican Observatory, is an American planetary scientist, born in 1952 in Detroit, Michigan. He earned his Bachelor's (1974) and Master's (1975) degrees in Earth and Planetary Sciences from MIT, followed by a Ph.D. in Planetary Science from the University of Arizona in 1978. He held postdoctoral and lecturer positions at Harvard College Observatory and MIT before joining the US Peace Corps in 1983, teaching physics and astronomy in Kenya for two years. Returning to the US in 1985, he became an assistant professor of physics at Lafayette College, Pennsylvania, until entering the Jesuit order in 1989. He took vows as a Jesuit brother in 1991, studying philosophy, theology, and physics.

Welcome Center“Faith Under Fire: Where Is God When It Hurts?”
Matt DeBoer is a Catholic school leader whose life and vocation have been deeply shaped by Catholic education.
Formed in Jesuit education at Creighton University, where he studied history and theology, and later at the University of Notre Dame, Matt has served Catholic schools with faith, courage, and a deep commitment to forming young people as peacemakers.
He now serves as principal of Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, guiding the community through healing and recovery after the tragic school shooting of August 27, 2025, which took the lives of Harper Moyski and Fletcher Merkel. In the face of grief, Matt has called his community to live the African proverb, “When you pray, move your feet,” inviting faith to become action, hope, and courageous witness.

TRAVELING STATUE OF
OUR LADY OF LA SALETTESUPPORT THE MISSIONARIES OF OUR LADY OF LA SALETTE
BY PRAYING FOR NEW LA SALETTE VOCATIONSFamilies and individuals are invited to welcome the Traveling Statue of Our Lady of La Salette into their homes for one month. During that time, they commit to praying the Rosary each day for new vocations to the Missionaries and Sisters of Our Lady of La Salette.
If you are interested in hosting the statue and praying for new vocations, please contact:
At the end of the month, the statue is returned during Sunday Mass and entrusted to another family, continuing this prayerful journey from home to home.
